Topcon’s revolutionary 3D-MC MAX now in New Zealand

Synergy Positioning Systems has debuted a significant new machine control system from Topcon, designed specifically for the dozer as a next-generation advance in fast and accurate blade control.

The all new Topcon 3D-MC MAX system is a true mast-less set-up that utilises a computer-controlled hydraulics system and is driven by newly developed dual IMUs (Inertial Measurement Units), engineered for maximum speed and response.

“This is the world’s first mast-less machine control system and really cements Topcon’s market leading role in developing ground-breaking technology designed for every aspect of the civil construction industry,” says Mike Milne, managing director of Topcon’s New Zealand distributor, Synergy Positioning Systems.

“There is a huge amount of excitement in the industry around this innovation. Here in New Zealand, where the Topcon brand is going from strength to strength, we’re proud to be among the first in the world to fit the all-new 3D-MC MAX system to one of our client’s dozers.”

The new 3D-MC MAX system is another example of Topcon’s suite of technology offerings helping construction entities realise increased value in their machine investment; an intuitive tool allowing the dozer operator to achieve project goals faster and with a smoother finish.

The new system is designed to provide a consistent result for dozer operators, regardless of rough or fine grade applications. Thanks to this industry-leading IMU technology, both the body and blade sensor keep the blade cutting edge on grade in any application; ensuring fast and efficient dozing in any environment.

There is also an added safety aspect in dispensing with masts that operators would normally need to see ‘around’. Now that the machine control system’s sensitive GNSS sensors are housed on the cab – rather than on the blade – component reliability has also improved even in the toughest environments.

The other benefit in dispensing with masts is increased productivity around daily tasks on the jobsite. With everything secured to the cab, there’s no need to refit the Topcon system components at the start of each working day; the operator can get straight out on site and start work.

Topcon’s New Zealand distributor, Synergy Positioning Systems, has just placed this country’s very first 3D-MC MAX system with multi-faceted construction company Exaro Contracting Limited.

Nick Griffin from Exaro – a company with a solid reputation in a variety of disciplines, as well as a growing fleet of heavy machinery utilising Topcon machine control technology – says the 3D-MC MAX is being used on the firm’s Caterpillar D6T dozer at a busy construction project in West Auckland.

“We’re pushing a lot of dirt pretty quickly with the dozer, so that’s a good result. We’ve invested in a lot of Topcon technology because it’s the way things are going and we’re really happy with the results; we can actually see the results right in front of us.

“Everyone is impressed with how fast the machine is working,” he says.

The system can be utilised by the operator through the Caterpillar joystick controller, meaning there’s no double handling of information in the cab.

Nick says the install process was handled well by the Synergy Positioning Systems team, with the dozer turned around quickly for deployment with the 3D-MC MAX system fitted.

“The install process was up to Synergy’s usual standard; everything went smoothly and we were kept in the loop throughout the entire process. The guys worked hard to ensure this frontline machine wasn’t out of action for too long.”

Feedback from here and overseas suggests the 3D-MC MAX system is providing operators with high-accuracy elevation, slope and blade rotation sensing, with the added benefit of increased operational speeds and better control.

“This sort of innovative technology from Topcon means more contractors will get more productivity out of their dozers over the busy summer contracting season ahead,” concludes Mike Milne.

“The mast-less 3D-MC MAX system advances the usability and adaptability of machine control technology. Forward-thinking companies like Exaro Contracting are helping to pave the way forward in the machine control revolution that’s taking place.”
