Synergy Hire Adds Flexibility to the Fleet
For contractors C&R Developments, the ability to lease Topcon machine control technology introduced them to an entirely new way of working.
Synergy Positioning Systems boasts an array of direct hire or lease options on Topcon machine control equipment, enabling entities of all sizes and disciplines to benefit from technology designed to help them work faster and smarter.
One such company is Cambridge-based civil and mining contractor C&R Developments, which runs Topcon machine control systems on dozers and excavators within its large fleet.
Nick Ross from C&R says that, while they now own seven Topcon 3D Indicate systems fitted to excavators and dozers, initially leasing the technology was a good way of testing it out on a variety of machines in a variety of environments.
“I was sold on it from the start, but it’s an investment you have to make allowances for. Leasing was an obvious first step for us.
“On the first project we used Topcon gear on, we kitted out a 20 ton machine with machine control; that gave us fantastic accuracy and we no longer needed a surveyor on site every day. Then we put machine control on a 45 ton excavator which made the 20 tonner redundant because the 45 ton machine did all the loading and trimming at the same time.”

Nick is especially pleased with the plug-and-play nature of Topcon machine control technology, ensuring that the company can utilise the technology across a variety of different brand name machines. Thanks to the flexibility of leasing or hiring through Synergy Positioning, Nick also knows he can quickly attach the gear to any of his existing or new machines as project work dictates.
“The finishing quality that Topcon provides is second-to-none, so we’ll put the gear on one of our graders next. As far as our other machines go, if we were to buy a new excavator or dozer from now on we’d stick Topcon machine control straight on it without question,” says Nick.
Synergy Positioning Systems Rental Manager, Pip Carson, says that Synergy Hire is also a cost-effective way for companies already using machine control to plug resource gaps for specific or across multiple projects.
“We have many clients who might already be using a Topcon system on their excavator, but need another module for a motor scraper, for example, as a one-off requirement. We can place the technology wherever it’s needed and for whatever length of time it’s needed for,” he says.
