Machine Control Explained - Part 2

Why use machine control?

The use of machine control results in benefits both at the site level and at a company-wide level. Some of the feedback we’ve received includes:

  • significant improvements to efficiency – quicker job completion, less time on site, fewer people on site, less staking
  • improved accuracy and reduced rework
  • operator autonomy, enabling cutting and filling as needed to a site design
  • reductions in operating costs – time, fuel, materials
  • higher machine productivity
  • access to more work and bigger jobs – especially where machine control is a requirement of contractors tendering for work
  • recognition in the industry for being current with the latest technology and best practice
  • improved job satisfaction of operators, helping to reduce staff attrition

“Introducing Topcon machine control systems has enabled us to take on much larger projects than we could before with manual surveying. Our staff are slowly learning that they’re literally sitting on tens of thousands of dollars’ worth of equipment and technology that is incredibly powerful. It has been a big change so we’re learning to think about jobs differently and we’re approaching our work in a new way, maximising the use of our investment.”
~ Ross Brewer, Operations Support at Camex

How do you get started with machine control?

The step towards machine control or survey technology can be daunting if you haven’t had any previous exposure to it. Often contractors are comfortable purchasing new machinery but can find the options of positioning technology available a bit overwhelming. Synergy Positioning has experienced staff throughout New Zealand who can meet with you to discuss some key areas to determine the most suitable solution for your business. We’ll consider:

  • the type of machine you require machine control on
  • whether you want to use the system across multiple machines
  • what project(s) you’re working on
  • whether you want to buy, lease or hire

Once we have put together the right package to suit your business, the system is installed and calibrated on your machine by our trained technicians. Our technical support staff then take the time to ensure you receive adequate training to use machine control effectively.
