July 1st Leap Second and Topcon GNSS Receivers

June 26, 2015

Leap Second to be Added

The International Earth Rotation and Reference System Service (IERS) in Paris, France observes the Earth's rotation and compares it to atomic time. As per IERS bulletin C 49, a positive leap second will be introduced on Wednesday, July 1, 2015 at Midday NZ time. The previous event occurred on June 1, 2012 at Midday NZ time.

Handling of upcoming positive leap second in Topcon receivers

Topcon receivers running in GPS-only mode will not be affected by this leap second introduction; systems will continue to run seamlessly before and after the leap second introduction.

Some Topcon receivers running in GPS+GLONASS configuration will experience shifts in standalone position for 2.5 minutes after the event and loss of fix position for about 20 minutes. Topcon recommends that you switch your receivers to GPS-only mode of operation for those 20 minutes.
