FARO partner Geomagic announces new plugin for Solidworks

September 20, 2016 – Utilising accurate scan data from FARO’s high speed Focus3D and Freestyle3D laser scanning instruments has just become easier for Solidworks users, with the new pointcloud-to-model workflow plugin from Geomagic.

This new solution is the industry’s most complete integrated Solidworks modelling solution, allowing users of the comprehensive design and engineering software to build complex 3D models of real world objects, by directly scanning or importing 3D scan data into the system.

Scans can now be quickly and accurately imported and transformed into CAD sketches or feature-based editable solid parts inside Solidworks.

“The Geomagic plugin for Solidworks is a ground-breaking new development that will allow Solidworks users to utilise 3D laser scanning technology as part of everyday project workflow,” says Jeremy Neilson of Synergy Positioning Systems.

“The software means that scan data can be imported, or surfaces and objects scanned directly in Solidworks, speeding up the pointcloud-to-model process immeasurably. The plugin will also work with a range of 3D scanning tools, making it a universal addition to the designer’s toolbox.”

Developing the tools with FARO users in mind, Geomagic designed the plugin specifically for the Solidworks environment, providing the opportunity to make tools point clouds and polygons more usable in the design process.

It’s now easy to create solid, feature-based parts using precise scanning registration, automated smoothing, mesh editing, auto sketch creation, automatic and guided feature extraction and accurate surface fitting to organic 3D feature scans, all inside Solidworks.

“FARO produces the fastest, lightest and most robust high speed laser scanners on the market,” concludes Neilson.

“With the development of the Geomagic plugin for Solidworks, we now have an end-to-end solution for every part of the design process, utilising products that are trusted by industry professionals everywhere.

“Now Solidworks users can scan almost anything and create a manufacture-ready design using a well-integrated suite of solutions.”
