FARO Labs mobilise laser scanning at InterGEO
July 18, 2016 – FARO Labs is augmenting highly precise 3D laser scanning hardware with robotics in a bid to automate BIM data collection. The results will be on show at the InterGEO spatial sector trade fair in October.
FARO Labs is developing a solution for the accurate 3D scanning of confined or potentially dangerous sites, where limited access or restricted available working space makes 3D spatial data collection more difficult.
By mounting a FARO 3D laser scanner to a robotic wheeled device, confined spaces – or even large-scale spaces – can be scanned with ease.
Although only in a preliminary stage of development at present, FARO Labs says the mobilised laser scanner helps automate the auditing process for BIM project work.
The robot means survey personnel can eliminate risk, by sending the FARO 3D laser scanner hardware into a difficult or unsafe environment and control it remotely.
Conversely, for large scale BIM data collation where large spaces need to be scanned, it is even envisaged that the robotic 3D laser scanner could be programmed with specific coordinates before being ‘released’ to explore and scan the required area overnight.
This would allow survey staff to return the following morning and download the gathered data, speeding up the scanning process, ensuring an efficient use of survey time and mitigating a potential drain on manpower.
Because the robot is aware of its surroundings through the use of proximity sensors and GPS coordinates, the device will avoid obstacles during the scan.
FARO will be showcasing the robotic 3D laser scanner on their stand at the InterGEO spatial sector trade fair, in Hamburg this coming October.
FARO is the world’s most trusted source for 3D measurement technology, offering scanning solutions which allow for high-precision 3D measurement, imaging and the comparison of parts and complex structures within production and quality assurance processes.
This technology is used for inspecting components and assemblies, rapid prototyping, documenting large volume spaces or structures in 3D, surveying and construction, as well as for investigation and reconstruction of accident sites or crime scenes.
